New trap house

Thanks to Terry we now have two new trap houses!

Mom is mad at me because she likes the old plywood trap house. She says we are ruining our redneck trap club image. We might be but I sure like the new houses!

Nov 7 practice

Practice went very well despite only having 4 coaches. All the parents jumped in to help which made the day go smooth. We have a lot of really talented young shooters they are really starting to excel and have fun. Shooting a shotgun is a sport that takes hand-eye coordination and believe it or not a ton of strength to be successful. For a lot of these young athletes we have switched them to shoot from their strong side. By strong side I mean we are lining their dominate (Strong) eye over the barrel and they are holding the gun up with their strong hand. By doing this at first it seems a little awkward but once we start to develop muscle memory it will become natural and the scores will start to soar. For others it just takes practice to develop sight pictures, muscle development and the hand-eye coordination. Many times the athlete that starts slow develop into the best shooters. I had a chance to work with the new shooters as well as the ones that have been in the program for 4 and 5 years. I enjoyed working with both because I can remember what the older athletes looked like on their first day and have a vision of what the younger ones will be like in 4 or 5 years. It is going to be a great year. I can already see improvement in both the old and young athletes.

Nice Practice

We held a coaches training with the first year athletes on October 10th. We had 12 new athletes show up ready to have some fun, learn about gun safety and crush some targets. For many of them it was their first time to ever pull the trigger of a shotgun and it go boom. We had a very successful day as all 12 athletes broke at least one target and many of them went home with bragging rights of how many they hit in a row out of the sky. Some targets were chipped, some broke and others absolutely crushed. By crushed I mean they just vaporized into a orange talcum powder looking residue. You should of seen their expression as they hit their first target! All the athletes had fun and so did all the coaches. We will do it again at the end of the month.

Registration

We had our coaches meeting and set registration for 6p.m. October 6, 2009 at the Masonic Lodge (Pinal Lodge #30) 1140 E Florence Blvd, Casa Grande, AZ 85122-4216.
Registration fees will once again be $50 and the program will be similar to past years with only minor changes. All athletes will be coached by certified Arizona Game and Fish Youth Shotgun Instructors who are committed to:
  • Provide a team based youth development program using the shotgun sports to instill discipline, safety, teamwork, ethics, self-confidence and other life values.
  • Provide a quality educational experience in Shotgun Sports to youth aged 9 though graduation of high school.
  • Provide youth with quality educational instruction on a limited basis.
  • Provide youth with the necessary equipment, on a loaner basis, to participate in the program.
  • Provide youth with the opportunity to participate in local, state and national competitions.

At the meeting we discussed that the Club needs to practice as a team at our home club. We went over the calendar of events, goals, safety rules and fun shoots. We then decided that the wind wasn't really blowing that hard and burned a little powder. It was great to see the coaches actually having a little fun. Every coach there walked away from the firing line with a smile. Fun was had by all!

Lead Instructors Meeting

We had the Lead Instructors meeting on Sept. 19th and the program will be funded the same as last year. Once all the paperwork comes in from AZGFD we will hold registration.

Having Some Fun

Here are some photos set to INXS "Guns in the Sky" off of the Kick album. ENJOY!

This is my first attempt at a video.

This video shows various coaches and athletes shooting as well as gives you a feel of the surrounding atmosphere. We sure have lots of fun at the range! This program would not be available without the support of Arizona Game and Fish Department and the NRA. Thanks again.

Fun Shoot Awards

Fun Shoot Awards
Date: Sat, 13 Dec 2008 21:37:34 -0700

Attention Coaches and Athletes,

The first Fun Shoot of the year is over. I hope all that attended had a wonderful time despite the weather. We had 11 athletes sign up and only 10 participate. I hope you are feeling better Austin. I know you must have been sick to miss shooting. I'd like to thank Christina for still helping out with a sick child at home. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! I would not have been able to run a trap field and get all the athletes their paper work and guns by myself. We had several first time "Fun Shooters" and I hope you we attend the next one. It should be a little less confusing next time now that you know the ropes. Be sure to go back to your coach and ask them to work on the things you need to improve on. Here are the awards our athletes received. If you left before the award ceremony and received an award I will give it to your coach and they will give it to you at your next practice.

Waylon W Rookie Level 1 Trap 1st place Sporting Clays 3rd place

Isaac B Intermediate Level 1 Trap 3rd place
Tanner S Intermediate Level 1 Trap 4th place
Jake M Intermediate Level 1 Trap 9th place Sporting Clays 8th place

Steven S Intermediate Level 2 Skeet 1st place Sporting Clays 4th place

Jonathan R Senior Level 1 Trap 1st place Skeet 1st place Sporting Clays 2nd place

Way to go team!

October Practice with Dust Devils

With the closing of Red Mountain Trap and Skeet the Dust Devils a SCTP team from the valley came down and practiced with CATS. This joint practice went as expected. Everyone that came out hit a target and learned about gun safety. A good time was had by all. The Dust Devils treated everyone to some Johnsonville Brats and I must say they were excellent! We also had potato salad and brownies. Yum! The Dust Devils would like to continue to practice at CATS about once a month. Our practices are now split up among the individual coaches so they will be smaller more one on one practices that should yeild some really good results. As I get the schedules from our coaches I will post them here so everyone knows what is going on.

Fun Shoot Changes

This year the fun shoots will run a little differently. The level one athletes will continue to shoot 25 targets in each event however the level two and three athletes will shoot 50 targets in each event. This means that a level one shooter shooting trap, skeet and sporting clays will shoot a total of 75 rounds while the level two and three athlete also shooting trap, skeet and sporting clays will shoot 150 rounds. For those who are new to the program or just have not been able to attend a "Fun Shoot" I encourage you to do so. They really are a lot of fun and the give the athlete a valuable experience. The athletes will be able to test their skills against other athletes from all over the state with similar skill levels.
